Since its inception in 2006, Gultrah Sound System Band has been the undisputed leader of the Tunisian underground scene, making them the most well-known alternative music group in Tunisia. The band's distinctive features include the gravelly voice and powerful lyrics of lead singer Halim Yousfi, the energy provided by drummers and percussionists Khalil Hermessi and Tareq Maaroufi, the depth of Kais Fenni's bass, and the captivating melodies played by guitarist Fourat Neffati and violinist Wissem Ziadi, all under the leadership of Halim. Gultrah's music has accompanied an entire generation of protesting youth through their formative years, and their songs are characterized by an active social engagement and a diverse range of musical inspirations, including reggae, rock, and roots. The band members often refer to their style as "roots tounsi," as their music continually draws from Tunisian musical heritage, all the while embracing a worldly perspective.
